Say Cheese! Portraits of the Welsh

February 1, 2010 10:00 amtoApril 9, 2010 4:00 pm

The National Library of Wales’ collection contains over 200,000 portraits spanning centuries of history, art, biography and fame. At its heart are portraits relating to Wales and the other Celtic nations. Portraits come in many forms - paintings, photographs, sculptures, engravings, drawings and various other media of artistic representations of a person, in which the face and expression are of primary importance.

The collection is impressive in its variety, ranging from the native Welsh artistic tradition of William Roos and Hugh Hughes; a selection of self-portraits and the works of some of the modern master portrait painters such as Sir Kyffin Williams, Will Roberts and David Griffiths, all of whom have kept alive the tradition of portraiture in Wales.

This exhibition displays portraits of notable men and women who have made a significant contribution to life in Wales.

This exhibition features includes framed works of art, portrait busts and photographs, under various themes, such as music, entertainment, sport, religion, politics, and the arts. This is by no means a definitive list of the famous faces of Wales, and aims only to highlight the richness and variety of the Library’s collection.

Since receiving funding from the Foyle Foundation and the Garfield Weston Foundation, steps have been taken to digitise part of the portrait archive. As a result, items will be available to view on our website from March 2010.

The Festival of Welsh Documentary Photography

November 20, 2009

Lens 5: Journeys

LENS will be a feast for the eye and a forum for Wales’ foremost photographers.

Speakers include:

David Hurn - One of the world’s top photographers will discuss his career as a Magnum photographer, a career that has seen him travel the world before returning to Wales to explore his roots in the critically acclaimed books, Living in Wales and Land of My Fathers.

Russell Roberts - The former head of photography at the National Media Museum, has been a reader at the European Centre for Photographic Research, University of Wales, Newport since 2006.

Keith Morris - A freelance photographer for the last 25 years specialising in theatre in Wales, Keith is regularly seen around Aberystwyth with his camera. His love affair with the town provided the inspiration for the publication of Aber - essays on Aberystwyth in 2008.

Dr Paul Bevan - The National Library’s Head of Information and Communication Technology will discuss the Library’s latest online venture in partnership with the photo-sharing website, Flickr.

Jayne Henley - The National Library’s Portrait digitisation project is nearing completion in January 2010. Jayne, the project coordinator, will discuss the project which saw over 15,000 Welsh portraits digitised and placed online and will showcase the photographic gems this project brought to light.

LENS is held at The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, who holds the largest photographic collection in Wales (over 800,000 photographs). The collection includes the earliest surviving Welsh photograph, a daguerreotype of Margam Castle taken by Calvert Jones in 1841.

This is the only festival of its kind held in Wales, aimed specifically at those interested in documentary photography, in the history of photography and/or Welsh social history.

Parking
Visitors and readers to The National Library of Wales will be charged a small fee for parking.

Authors of Wales

November 9, 2009 2:00 pmtoDecember 5, 2009 2:00 pm

A selection of archives, photographs and paintings relating to two literary giants from Wales, Kate Roberts and Dylan Thomas.

Dylan Thomas

Dylan Thomas (27 October 1914 – 9 November 1953) is Wales’ best-known poet. It is said that the author and performer could touch people with his rich voice and masterful presentations.

Dylan was born and raised in 5 Cwmdonkin Drive, an affluent area of Swansea. In 1934, within the same year of publishing his first volume of poetry, 18 poems, he also moved to London to pursue fame and fortune, but alcohol reliance and debts became a great burden to him.

Dylan met his future wife; Caitlin MacNamara in a tavern in the West End of London and the pair enjoyed a turbulent relationship before setting up home in Talacharn in Carmarthenshire. But this literary giant died on November 9th 1953, when he was only 39 years of age, in a hospital in New York.

Kate Roberts

The renowned author, Kate Roberts was born on 13 February 1891 in Rhosgadfan, in Caernarfonshire. As a quarryman’s daughter, her background and village life played an important role in her early literature.

Shortly after marrying Morris T Williams, a printer, in 1928, the pair moved to Denbigh and bought The Gee Press, publishers of the Welsh-language weekly, Y Faner (The Banner).

Her work is renowned for the richness of her language and she continued to write up until her death on 14th of April, 1985 at 94 years of age.
