Wild West 2009 Cycle Tour

6 June 2009
June 5, 2009toJuly 18, 2009

In June and July, we’ll be making our way around the wild, wonderful coast of Wales.

Join us on this tour and you can expect beautiful beaches, crashing coastline, green, leafy cycle paths, undulating hills and a learning day or three at the Centre for Alternative Technology, Howies (the ethical clothing company) and a permaculture farm. Plus, really, really friendly Welsh people.

Where we’re going

Take a peek at a map of the route here.

At least, this is what our latest sources tell us. These things do tend to change a bit, but we’re pretty sure we’ll be passing through these places:

  • Machynlleth
  • Aberaeron
  • Aberystwyth
  • Newcastle Emlyn
  • Cardigan
  • Fishguard
  • St David’s
  • Pembroke
  • Carmarthen
  • Swansea
  • Mumbles
  • Cardiff
  • Merthyr Tydfil

Where you can see us perform

Although most of our performances aren’t open to the public since we spend most of our time visiting schools and youth clubs, we’ll also be doing a few open community performances. Here are the public performances we’ve planned so far.

June 14 - Machynlleth, at the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) as part of bike week celebrations.  You can find more info on the CAT website (including how to get there) . Here’s what we’ll be doing:

  • Bike maintenance workshop 11:00am
  • Morning Choices performance, 3:00pm, straw bale theatre

June 19 - Newcastle-Emlyn, community performance (probably at the Town Hall, organised by the local Transition Town group)

This summer, three teams of cyclists are taking to the road.

After the rip-roaring success of our 2008 tours, we are ready and raring to get together three teams of young, cycling, performing, ruckus-causing tour members to travel across the UK this summer. Wanna come with? Then pick a tour, any tour! Tour member applications are open now .

Here are the route and date details (very much subject to change):

  • Wild West -  5th June - 18th July: Machynlleth, Cardigan, Pembroke, Swansea, Cardiff, Merthyr, Ross-on-Wye
  • East Coast - 7th Aug - 19th Sep: Peterborough, King’s Lynn, Norwich, Lowestoft, Ipswich, Cambridge
  • Caledonian Road - 7th Aug - 19th Sep: Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Stirling, Glasgow, Isle of Arran

Over the next few months, we’ll be hard at work arranging presentations with schools, festivals and other community venues. Over the course of six weeks, Otesha teams will travel around the UK in two-wheeled communities, sharing a unique brand of theatre, humour and DIY ethos. Tour members will get to demonstrate that living sustainably is as easy as reconsidering the simple choices that we all make from day to day. We’ll also showcase the Otesha play, facilitate interactive workshops on specific issues like climate change or fair trade, and invite people to participate in hands-on sessions on bike repairs, do-it-yourself media and more.
